Barca v Juventus: Barca 0-1 Juve: Pardew and Co. to go for the jugular
Transfer window – January 31, 2020 02:00:00By Football Italian staffThe news that Manchester United will be chasing Juventus star Gianluigi Buffon after the Bianconeri lost their opening game in the Champions League on Thursday has raised questions in football circles about the future of Barca.
According to reports, the Biancanos will demand €55m (£40.8m) in exchange for the Italian striker, which could bring an end to their pursuit of the 31-year-old.
It has already been reported that Juventus president Andrea Agnelli will meet with Buffon to discuss a deal, but Barca president Aurelio De Laurentiis has now confirmed that the club is not prepared to pay more than €55 million.
“I’m not interested in any offer of more than [€55m],” De Laurentian said.
De Laurentiys comments are a bit harsh on Buffon, but it’s also understandable for a club that has lost to Barcelona three times in the last 12 months.
Despite Buffon’s prolific form in recent years, the player has yet to score a Premier League goal.
His departure will be a blow to the Biancocelesti and could have a major impact on the club’s squad, with a lack of goalscorers potentially putting them in danger of relegation.
While Buffon is an attractive prospect for Barca, it’s unlikely that Juventus will be able to sell the player this summer, particularly given that they have already made it clear that they will not sell in the January transfer window.
Should Juventus and Barca go their separate ways, the Italian side will be without the services of Carlos Tevez, Leonardo Bonucci, Leonardo Pinto and Mario Balotelli, along with the likes of Marco Verratti and Andrea Barzagli.
This leaves a gaping hole in Barca’s attacking options, and the departure of Buffon will only exacerbate that situation.
The departure of the star striker could also be a factor in whether Juventus or Barca win the Champions, which is unlikely.
Barcelona have already secured the services a host of world class players, including Luis Suarez, Neymar and Luis Suarez in addition to Luis Suarez.
But if Buffon leaves the Biancalcio, the team will have to replace them.
In the Champions Leagues, Barca have two key players in Lionel Messi and Neymar.
It’s unlikely the club will be in a position to offer Buffon the money he would like to command in a transfer, and this could lead to a drop in Barça’s hopes of securing a top-four finish.
With Juventus looking to secure a Champions League spot this season, and Barça looking to be relegated from La Liga, the situation could see Barca and Juventus competing for the Champions league, something that could prove to be a difficult proposition.
If Barca are relegated from the Champions as a result of Buffo’s departure, they will have lost one of their top-class attacking players in Buffon and their top scorer in Neymar, who could leave for Manchester City in the summer.
Battles in Europe have never been easier, and even if Buffo is unable to secure the Champions spot, Barça will be weakened on the pitch.
There is little doubt that Juventus have the player in Buffo, and that will only increase their confidence going into the new campaign.
However, with Neymar also set to leave in the coming months, it could be a long-term challenge for the Bianca squad, which will be desperate to ensure they don’t fall victim to relegation.
